PlayStation Plus Subscribers Hit Out At Hidden Upgrade Costs

According to reports, PlayStation Plus users may be charged additional fees if they previously bought their subscription at a discount.

Today, the brand new PlayStation Plus overhaul finally launched in Asia, and it appears that it’s already off to a spectacularly unfortunate start.

Reactions to the inflated cost of the Extra and Premium tiers when the overhaul was announced were already mixed, but now it seems that subscribers may end up paying even more than they expected.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is just one of the games that Extra and Premium tier PS Plus subscribers will be able to get their hands on - take a look at the gameplay demo below.

As spotted by @Nibellion on Twitter, there have been reports that users who bought their original PS Plus subscription at a discount will be charged a higher upgrade fee to make up for it.

According to Reddit user andyppbb, if you previously got a discount on a membership that’s still running (so, you still have time left that you already paid for), you’ll have to pay back the difference of that discount if you choose to go to Extra or Premium tier, which seems really unfair, to be honest? It also seems really odd that it’s even being calculated this way, rather than users just having to pay the flat difference between what’s now known as the Essential tier and the two pricier ones.

Predictably (and understandably), people are very annoyed: “WTF?!! This needs to go to the front page. Why would you want your customer who got a discount to pay back the difference if it was offered as a discount! This needs to blow up!” wrote lolwizardmage. “So basically Sony gave us discounts on the [annual] Plus subscription and are going to charge for them when we upgrade our subscriptions after the new Plus rolls out? Great move Sony,” added LucasPDF.

We already knew that Sony were trying to put a stop to subscription stacking - late last month, those who’d bought yearly PS Plus subscriptions to add onto their existing one were met with error codes when trying to redeem them. To completely reverse previously valid discounts is another thing, though - it’s very early days for the overhaul, so we’ll have to see how Sony respond to the situation.

The new PlayStation Plus service launches on 13 June in America, and 23 June in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
