PlayStation Plus policy announcement is a major blow to subscribers

Sony reaffirms its stance

Sony will not budge on its PlayStation Plus first-party policy, which will surely be a major blow for many subscribers.

PlayStation Plus, regardless of the tier, offers plenty of bang for your buck. Of course, the higher the PS Plus tier out of the three, the more games you can access.

For example, PlayStation Plus Essential offers at least three games per month, such as this week's newly announced offerings, which can be kept in your library with an active subscription.

Its top tier, PlayStation Plus Premium, offers everything included in Essential and Extra, but with a plethora of retro games, movies, trials, and more. The only downside of the top two tiers is that many games will come and go on rotation.

PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium offer hundreds of games to play, many of which are first-party titles such as God of War Ragnarök, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, The Last of Us Part I, and so forth.

However, if there’s one other snag with Sony’s PlayStation Plus service as a whole, it is the reluctance to launch major first-party titles on the service, something that Xbox Game Pass subscribers benefit from.

If you were hoping that Sony would one day change that stance anytime soon, then you’re going to be greatly disappointed.

According to an interview with Game File, Sony has confirmed that it has no plans to add first-party releases to the service as day one launches.

“Our strategy of finding four or five independent day-and-date titles – and using that to complement our strategy of bringing games in when they're 12, 18 months old or older – that balance for us is working really well across the platform,” said Nic Maguire, VP of global services and sales at SIE.

“Yeah, not only will Sony not add day one games, but it’ll take away its own games for no apparent reason,” Reddit user residentevilfan3 reacted in a Reddit thread.

“This is why I still predominantly buy games. PS Plus is a good value rental service, but that's all it is. A rental service,” added Wipedout89.

“I have no problem with Sony not doing the day one thing. But it does NOT feel like it’s adding first-party games one year after release,” exclaimed dolphinvision.

“The third-party day one games are usually crap, and it’s taking away games it owns from PS Plus! It's why I'm probably downgrading and staying with PS Plus Extra,” they continued.

I can’t see Sony ever changing its stance, as wonderful as it would be to get major first-party titles launch on PlayStation Plus.
