PlayStation Now Attempts To Rival Xbox Game Pass With New Day One Release

Next month, PlayStation Now users will get access to a brand new game on day one, which definitely should have been a thing already.

People on the internet like to complain about things. This we know. That said, it’s fairly impressive that I genuinely don’t think I can pinpoint a time where people were ever generally happy with the state of PlayStation Now.

Clearly, Sony is aware of that too, and now it seems like they’re trying to make it a little more appealing for users. Xbox Game Pass has always had the edge when it comes to games subscription services, and undeniably one of the things it has going for it is the fact that it offers day one releases, as well as older games.

Ever wondered what would happen if you subjected a PlayStation to a mega-powerful water jet? This. This would happen.

Now, it’s been announced that PS Now will be offering a day one release next month. It’s going to be Shadow Warrior 3, an upcoming first-person shooter developed by Flying Wild Hog, and published by Devolver Digital. This might not be the release at the top of everyone’s 2022 games list, but it certainly looks good, and the fact that its a day one release automatically makes it a step up from the usual stuff that’s on offer.

There’s already been talk of a complete overhaul of Sony's subcription services - apparently, PS Now is set to be combined with PlayStation Plus, alongside the addition of a number of classic PlayStation and PlayStation 2 titles. Bloomberg claimed last year that this new service is codenamed Spartacus, and will be launching in spring this year. It’s, uh, almost spring now. Just saying.

Speaking of PlayStation Plus, earlier, we found out what March’s free games on that are (probably) going to be thanks to a reliable leaker. Apparently, we have Ark Survival Evolved and Team Sonic Racing to look forward to. Yay? Look, it’s not that either of those are bad games or anything, but they are a little lacklustre. It’s also rumoured that the new martial arts brawler, Sifu, will also be in the offing. In our review, our very own Mike Diver gave it a 7/10, praising its pretty visuals and depth. So that’s something, right? Sure.
