New PlayStation 5 System Update Available Now, With Some Welcome Improvements

Here's what it does

Sony Interactive Entertainment has released yet another system update for the PlayStation 5, the beautifully named Version: 22.01-05.02.00.

While this new update isn't anything like as substantial as the March PlayStation 5 update, it should still be a welcome new addition for all the new-gen gamers out there.

According to the patch notes, the new update only really does one thing, and that's "improve system performance". Like I said, not all that massive - but who doesn't love a bit of improved system performance? I know I go nuts for it. A real fiend for improved system performance, me.

The good news is that there are much bigger updates yet to come this year. Last month Sony confirmed a long-awaited feature would be arriving soon in the form of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR).

"We're also pleased to share that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is planned to release on PS5 in the coming months," Sony wrote in a blog post. "This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render instantly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced. Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch."

March's impressive update for PS5 and PS4 also brought with it slew of new accessibility features, chat options, and general quality-of-life improvements. It also very briefly managed to take down PlayStation Plus and online access to dozens of games, but we don't talk about that because it's all better now.
