The PS4 now has a brand new system update for you to go and download. No, you’re not seeing things.
We may have had the PS5 for nearly five years now, but that doesn’t mean Sony is looking to leave the last-generation console behind.
As Sony recently teased, the company is looking to employ a multi-generational ecosystem, meaning the PS4, PS5, and eventual PS6 will all receive support and updates alongside each other.
This is good news for those who haven’t had a chance to upgrade their systems yet, or would rather stay a generation or two behind for whatever reason.

A new system update for the PS4 has just been released, bringing the console up to version 12.52. To get it, simply boot up your PS4 console and navigate to system update.
As far as what’s included with the update, Sony simply has one line in the patch notes: “We’ve made some security fixes to the system software.”
While this doesn’t reveal much, it should mean that your experience while playing online should be a little more secure.
But what it more likely means is that it’s patched out some vulnerabilities that drives the modding community, meaning it’s a little trickier to jailbreak consoles.

It’s these kinds of mods that allowed us to see things like Bloodborne or Driveclub at 60FPS, so while this update won’t affect the vast majority of PS4 users, it will set things back a little in the modding community.
Remember that jailbreaking your console is against Sony’s Terms of Service though, and by doing this you risk your console being bricked and your PSN account being banned.
The same is also happening with the PS3 at the moment, too.
Despite being almost two decades old, Sony released a security patch for the PS3 in March which required users to update their console to continue using the Blu Ray drive.
