PlayStation 5 Major System Update Officially Rolling Out Now

Dualsense on several devices at once, you say?

For those of you who keep up with PlayStation console betas, you'll have been expecting the release of a pretty major firmware update over the last few months. Well, the time has finally come and it has begun to roll out on consoles, but you'll need to manually force the update if you want it on your home console.

As explained by Sony, the new update is available from today (17 September) but you'll need to head into your settings to get the installation process started. Specifically, you'll need to go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then you can start it from there.

So what exactly is included in the PS5 update? This time around, players can take advantage of advanced Dualsense pairing for the first time, which will allow you to pair your PS5 controller to multiple devices at once. Both the normal Dualsense pad and Dualsense Edge will work with the new setting and you shouldn't need to do much to get it going once the update has been downloaded.

This will allow you to pair your controller with up to four devices and switch between them seamlessly. The way it works is by holding down the PlayStation button and one of the four action buttons at the same time (triangle, square etc.) This then allows you to hold down that action button for five seconds to switch back to the assigned device easily.

The other major highlight feature is the new Power Saver mode, which Sony say is a major part of their push towards environmentally friendly solutions for the console. Essentially, when activated, it allows the console to scale back performance significantly, which then allows the console to consume significantly less power. You'll need to work some settings magic to get it going though, so we've broken down exactly what you'll need to do below:

  1. Navigate to Settings > System from the home page.
  2. Select Power Saving and then click Power Saver for Games.
  3. Turn on Use Power Saver and pick from the available games that you would like to use the setting.

Not every game will be able to work under Power Saver conditions, but some big titles including Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, Demon’s Souls, and Ghost of Yōtei all include support for the new mode.

The update should be available now, but if you can't see it yet, just give it a few more hours as Sony confirmed there may be a delay in it populating on all consoles.
