A hefty update dedicated to stability

Despite the rumours that the PlayStation 6 will arrive a lot sooner than we had first thought, it seems as though Sony is still supporting the PlayStation 5 to the bitter end.

With the PlayStation 5 hurtling towards its five-year anniversary, we are well into the lifespan of the latest Sony console, especially with the most dedicated of fans already upgrading to the PlayStation 5 Pro in recent years.

The PlayStation 6 may be in development at Sony but players are still enjoying their time with the PS5 and lapping up the minimum amount of exclusives it has to offer.

That is why many users will appreciate another major firmware update being rolled out to the PS5 as of today.

Codenamed 25.07-12.20.00, the firmware update aims to add system stability but, despite the patch being on the heftier side, it is nothing to get your hopes up about.

Coming in at a reasonable 1.319GB, which likely won't take very long to install, will provide the following quality-of-life features.

First up is the ability to check your console’s serial number as well as those of any DualSense wireless controllers connected via USB or Bluetooth.

To do this on console, select Settings > System > System Software > Console Information, and then check Serial Number.

For your DualSense, head to Settings > Accessories > General > Advanced Settings > View Serial Number.

This will be helpful if you ever need to troubleshoot your PS5 or get in touch with the manufacturer when problems do arise.

Secondly, Sony has updated the device software of the DualSense Edge wireless controller to add more stability.

There is also improved stability and overall system software performance overall.

Last but not least is improved messages and usability on some screens, according to Sony’s patch notes.

This latest PlayStation 5 update is not one we would typically notice but there is no doubt that some users will enjoy the various new features it has introduced to our consoles.

However, as mentioned, it is nothing that will affect day-to-day usage but just proves that Sony is doing what it takes to add the little things that can make a console great as well as show us what we could be in for with the launch of the PlayStation 6 in the future.

The 25.07-12.20.00 update will begin downloading the next time you boot up your PlayStation 5 depending on your user settings.
