Xbox CEO drops Helix bombshell with expected Series X and S-style 'family of consoles'

With a quarter of a century of making consoles under their belt, Xbox is making big waves in the upcoming years.

The Xbox Series S and X are soon to make way for a new console codenamed Project Helix, with Microsoft giving the current console one last hoorah with a swanky new limited edition run.

Yet with Project Helix on the horizon, the new Xbox CEO has been inundated with questions surrounding the future of the consoles, especially following the announcement of the new disc-to-digital programme.

Appearing at Gamescom, Asha Sharma has now revealed the first of many Project Helix bombshells, as she has revealed that a 'family' of consoles is being made, not just a single new-gen Xbox.

Project Helix to get Series S|X split

In an interview with the BBC, in which the Xbox CEO already detailed that the upcoming Project Helix might not be able to have a disc tray, Sharma revealed that there will be a 'family of consoles' akin to how the current-gen consoles are split.

"[We've] been hard at work on a great next generation and a great family of devices for Helix, and we’ll share more soon," Sharma said.

It's the first time that the CEO has revealed that Xbox is working on more than one body.

She also doubled down on the idea that Xbox is working on a way to bring PC games to Xbox, such as finding a way to activate Steam and Epic Games launchers.

"We will of course continue to push the boundaries of performance,” she added.

“We’ve talked about being able to not only play your console games, but also play your PC games on your console.

“I think in addition, the industry needs to start to innovate on affordability and efficiency. That is something that we have not had to do."

Smaller consoles are the 'most affordable way to play GTA 6'

With the news that at least two console variants are being made, she also revealed that the smaller consoles are the 'most affordable' way to play the biggest games.

Specifically, she outlined that Grand Theft Auto VI works well on the Series S and is the cheapest way to enjoy the expected Game of the Year winner.

In a separate interview with Play Day One, she said, "I think this is going to be a ‘banger’ fall. I think that Series S is going to be the most affordable way to play GTA.

"I think that there’s going to be a lot more to come. And importantly, in Germany- we are growing in Europe. PC is up double digits year on year. While others were shrinking in console year over year, we are growing in the UK. And so we are just getting started.
