Sony has officially teased the PlayStation 6, making that next generation all the more nearer.
Although it may not feel like it, the PS5 has been around for nearly five years now, having released towards the end of 2020.
Five years on and we’ve got some upcoming bangers like GTA VI and Ghost of Yōtei which look like they’ll push the PS5 hardware to the max.

With all that said, Sony is always looking ahead to the future, and it seems the next generation of hardware is not far off.
In an interview with Video Games Chronicle, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino was asked about the future of the PlayStation platform.
“While we cannot share further details at this stage, the future of the platform is top of mind,” Nishino said. “We are committed to exploring a new and enhanced way for players to engage with our content and services.”
In the same interview, Lynn Azar, SVP of finance and corporate development emphasised the importance of cross-generation players across PS5, PS4, and PC.

“As Nishino-san mentioned, we’re still exploring what the future of our platform would look like,” she said.
“So, we’ve reduced traditional cyclicality, as you describe it, by establishing a large ecosystem of players across both the PS5 and PS4 generations, which provides recurring revenues.”
Azar later adds: “As we continue to drive a multi-generational ecosystem into the future, we’ll provide new ways for players to access the platform and experience our content and services.”
From this, it sounds like Sony will continue to support its players on PS4 and PS5 even after the PS6 launches.

Given that Azar also acknowledged that subscriptions and microtransactions are the biggest source of revenue at the moment, it’s possible we could see an Xbox-like approach with letting you stream PS6 games from the internet to your older consoles via PlayStation Plus.
The PS6 is still going to be a few years away at the very least, but we’re keen to see what Sony does here to make it feel truly next gen.
