We're perhaps experiencing one of the most volatile weeks in the gaming industry's history.
Xbox is preparing to announce mass layoffs that have been described by insiders as a "bloodbath"; there are already five major studios named as being considered for closure with the belief being that layoffs will extend far beyond this.
PlayStation has since joined in with its own catastrophic reveal. From January 2028, it'll cease producing physical copies of games with digital-only copies available from then on.
This was accompanied by the announcement that the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita digital stores will soon be shut down.
In Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua, the PlayStation Store will shut down on the PS3 in August 2026. It'll then close in additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries from late 2026.

Finally, it'll shut in all other countries in July 2027 which is also when the PS Vita store will close worldwide.

This may not initially seem all that connected to the as-yet unannounced PlayStation 6, but both announcements essentially spell out the PS6's death day.
When the PlayStation Store closes on the PS3 and PS Vita, users of those consoles will no longer be able to purchase digital games as there's no digital secondhand market. Thankfully, there are plenty of physical PS3 and PS Vita games out there which can be resold to soften the blow.
I now want you to think ahead to the PS6 which will exist within PlayStation's now-confirmed digital-only future.
You won't be able to sell or purchase unwanted first-party PS6 games at the likes of CEX, eBay, Vinted, or on any other secondhand platform. All consumers will be reliant on the availability of the PlayStation Store.
What happens when that PlayStation Store ceases to be supported? The PlayStation 3 store has lasted for 20 years, with the PS Vita store having only been supported for 15 years.
If we're to assume that the PlayStation 6 is to launch in 2028 (or even in the following years), it stands to reason, based on what's been announced, that the store could cease to exist by 2050 - perhaps even earlier.
In that scenario, in a digital-only era, you wouldn't be able to purchase any additional PS6 first-party games ever again - and that's terrible for game preservation.
Certainly, by 2050, we'll probably be on to the PS8 or something unthinkable, but many gamers enjoy opening up their retro consoles.
I can take my PS1 down from the attic and still easily enjoy my physical games. I can even pick up games I don't own secondhand on resale sites.
What if one day I take down my PS6 in the distant future. Will the software still be supported that allows me to log into the console and access my owned digital games? I definitely won't be able to purchase more games with all PlayStation Stores reaching an end of life point.
It's a huge concern for game preservation. Console generations to date have always been something we can revisit. Sure, the odd piece of software here and there may have become unsupported, but it's not a wide scale problem due to physical media containing all the files you need.

As soon as we enter a digital-only generation, consoles become a transient point in time that'll, one day, become nigh impossible to revisit.
Digital games may feel more seamless and instantaneous now, but eventually, we're going to be mourning the fact that we can't revisit the gaming generations that we once loved so dearly.
