PlayStation 5 free game giveaway quietly changes terms, fans not happy

Last week Sony announced a new deal that would allow new PlayStation 5 owners to download one free game of their choice. However, it seems as though this deal now has new terms and fans are not happy.

Shared by one Reddit user, the deal allowed new owners to download and activate a game of their choice from the PS Store. With games such as The Last of Us, Death Stranding, Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War up for grabs, it was the perfect opportunity to get your hands on a much-loved Sony title.

If the deal sounds too good to be true, it is because Sony has now added a slight change to the terms of the deal - “BY INVITATION ONLY”. The new restriction means that customers now have to be invited to access the promotion. The new terms read -

“BY INVITATION ONLY. FREE GAME OFFER TERMS

Limited to select games. Offer valid only in the U.S. for eligible PSN account holders who are at least 18 years of age and purchase and activate a new PS5 console by October 20, 2023 @ 23:59pm (PDT). GAME MUST BE REDEEMED ON YOUR ACTIVATED PS5 CONSOLE BY NO LATER THAN OCTOBER 20, 2023 @ 23:59pm (PDT). Limit 1 game per user. No substitutions or replacements. Offer is non-transferable and cannot be combined with other select offers. Game selections subject to change at any time. Offer subject to change or cancellation at any time. Void where prohibited.”

It’s unclear who this deal applies to and how customers can receive an invitation but it’s clear this is Sony’s way of stopping too many people claiming a free game. It’s a shame the deal has been amended but it makes sense that the company is still relying on PlayStation owners to subscribe to its PS Plus service.
