Obsession and Backrooms have dominated the box office as of late, with the latter boasting a clear and obvious link back to the world of gaming.
Over the years, many games have surfaced inspired by the very same lore that Backrooms is based upon, with a new take on the concept having recently landed on Steam.
Backrooms Lost Dimension is a new free single-player horror game developed by SG Studios.
“During an expedition, two archaeologists discover a hidden mural among ancient ruins, belonging to the mysterious Alborian civilisation,” begins the synopsis.

“Once decoded, the ancient prophecy engraved on the stone unleashes a black hole that sucks the two scholars in, plunging them into the distorted dimension of the Backrooms.
“Lurking in the shadows is Lady Rose, an enigmatic and iconic figure who appears to be the guardian of this place.
“Legend has it that if Lady Rose were to sing, her voice could collapse the entire dimension."

To escape and survive, players of Backrooms Lost Dimension will need to solve puzzles and outmanoeuvre “malicious creatures”.
As mentioned, Backrooms Lost Dimension is single-player but that’s set to change in the future.
The game is currently available in early access so players should expect to see improvements and new additions in the coming months.
One of the title’s planned additions is a multiplayer mode called Wild Dimension which offers a unique twist on the game beyond the simple change of single-player to multiplayer.
Wild Dimension will be played on an island built up of diverse biomes, incorporating open-world survival elements.
“This alternative reality was created by Lady Rose to deceive the Guardians of Time. The game will operate on a Seasonal basis: each season will overhaul the island with map updates, gameplay changes, and new story fragments,” devs note. It almost sounds like a take on Fortnite.
It’s hoped that new levels and features will also be added throughout the early access period, although specific details aren’t yet available.
What we do know is that Backrooms Lost Dimension currently features 10 playable levels.
As a reminder, Backrooms Lost Dimension is totally free-to-play with the plan being that future chapters also remain free; players will be able to unlock these using free currency earned in-game.
Steam is packed to the rafters for gamers on a budget:
The title is off to a ‘Mixed’ start on Steam.
“I love the story to this game. I have played over 20 backrooms games and none had a story line,” read one positive review, while another added, “Incredible! [...] 2026 is amazing. I absolutely love this! Thanks for releasing it for free. I hope this Early Access period helps make this game as perfect as possible.”
Of course, a slew of negative reviews have caused the ‘Mixed’ rating. That’s because Backrooms Lost Dimension does, unfortunately, feature what many are dubbing “AI slop” when it comes to things like loading screens.
Strangely, the game appears not to have adhered to Steam’s AI disclosure if that is the case as nothing is visible on the game’s listing page.
That’ll surely put many players off but Backrooms Lost Dimension continues to linger on Steam’s trending free games chart.
