As popular as RPGs are, the genre’s greatest strength is arguably also its greatest curse.
RPGs largely boast pretty hefty runtimes and that can be a problem for many gamers.
Whether its work, school, university, or social commitments, free time can be hard to come by.
Add in a backlog and attempt to keep up with the monthly release cycle, and many of us end up setting RPGs to one side for another time.

The latest free RPG to arrive on PC storefront Steam though may be perfect for anyone who identifies with that situation.
That’s because, according to one player, it’s perfect to play in “shorter bursts”.
Embers of the Gods is the RPG in question, developed by a studio of the same name.
In fact, it refers to itself as a “next-generation MMORPG with a multi-view fantasy theme” and, like I said, it’s free-to-play.
That does mean that Embers of the Gods features microtransactions so do keep that in mind.
Within the title, players choose from three character classes, and those are Warrior, Ranger, and Mage.
You’ll essentially partake in large-scale combat encounters with your class, quite obviously, dictating the weapons at your disposal.
It’s very much a classic RPG in which players are able to upgrade their skills as they progress through the various combat encounters and arenas they come across in the game.
Players can freely navigate through the game’s world either on foot or via mount which is where you’ll be able to complete tasks and engage in those real-time skirmishes.
The UI of the game is, I’ll warn, pretty busy, but that’s perhaps to be expected from a free RPG of this kind.
There are many inputs and upgrade points to wrap your head around, but Embers of the Gods doesn’t demand much of your time in a single sitting.

“In ancient times, a meteor streaked across the sky and struck the continent, bringing with it the divine fire of wisdom,” the synopsis begins.
“From then on, the continent was known as the Continent of Divine Fire. Today, however, the divine fire has mutated, and more and more people are falling victim to its effects.
“As the protagonist, you will follow the Valkyrie on her journey, defeating various mutated beings and ultimately restoring peace to the fantasy continent.”
It continues, “The game will be told from the protagonist's traveler's perspective, allowing players to role-play as various heroes and showcase humanity's courage and resilience in the face of magical calamities.
“Simultaneously, it explores the secrets and conflicts behind countless myths, offering an unprecedented combat experience and a relaxed, hands-free resource-gathering system, striving to provide players with a deep role-playing experience.”
Ember of the Gods is only a few days old but it’s already sitting at Mostly Positive on Steam, correct at the time of writing.
Others have criticised the game for being a bog standard straight-from-mobile port, so there is that.
Given that it’s free to play, there’s no harm in giving it a whirl as you’ll likely soon get a feel for whether its formula is for you or not.
