Developer 81monkeys has launched a free RPG on PC storefront Steam that’s already going down exceptionally well with players.
On the surface, it appears to be your standard pixel-art RPG, inspired by the Japanese classics. And while I suppose the game is very much just that, it’s also based on the most unexpected of IPs, Wendy’s.
Yes, I’m talking about Wendy's of fast food fame. WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones is a new 2D RPG where you play as Wendy on a battle against evil mechs in a bid to save “a culinary kingdom in battle”.
“When mechanised monsters invade a culinary kingdom, it’s up to Wendy to save Savoria from mech-trouble,” begins the game’s synopsis.

“Welcome to WendyQuest, an epic original adventure where you earn real food as you play.
“Play as Wendy and battle Mech Corp’s mechs, solve puzzles, and embark on an epic quest to unite four magical stones to save Savoria. Will you restore order to a realm in peril? The fate of flavor is in your hands.”
It sounds like a clever marketing stunt and while this is most definitely marketing, the game actually looks great - and by all accounts is.
WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones currently boasts a Steam score of 91%, correct at the time of writing - and no AI was used during the game’s development, which is always refreshing to hear.

“Wendy's is out here doing more side quests again. Though honestly this game is actually decently made for a free game promoting Wendy's. The design and gameplay are both honestly pretty fun. I am actually looking forward to the next game this studio puts out,” one player said.
Another wrote: “For a game that's quite literally meant to be a s***post, this is a genuine love letter to gaming. If you like JRPGS, particularly the older ones, you'll love this. The music, which is retro-sounding, is dope. The animations are crafted with tons of love. The characters range from charming to cringe- in the best way possible.”
Others described the game as “surprisingly decent” and “10/10, will play more”.

It should take you around 15 hours to complete WendyQuest which is a lot for a freebie
The gimmick is that you can earn vouchers within the game to spend on real-life items at Wendy’s but not all countries have access to the restaurant chain. If that’s you, it’s perfectly okay to play WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones for fun.
Some of the enemies you’ll face off against include the likes of Golden Archers and Hot Sludge Sundaes, while the French Fry Archer, Spicy Chickeneer, and Frosty Mage are among your allies.
There are five regions to explore within WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones, including “salty forests, seasoned deserts, rugged beefy bluffs, and Frosty-capped peaks”.
As with all good RPGs, each region features its own hidden secrets for those who enjoy exploring every nook and cranny.
It’s combat that makes up the vast majority of what WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones offers. It looks to be your classic turn-based party formula, with Wendy and allies launching attacks one at a time.
I never thought I’d be recommending you play a Wendy’s themed game but honestly, if you’re short of something to play at the moment, this could be it.
