Steam users can now pick up a new survival game with horror elements that takes you one hour to beat, and what better way to spend an hour?
Above is the latest psychological horror game that Steam users can currently enjoy, providing a photorealistic first-person experience at no extra cost.
Above is a short experience, designed to be finished within an hour, and uses a lot of environmental visual and audio cues to represent the horror.
This includes sound-based tension where your actions can attract unwanted attention, with additional pressure added with subtle systemic pressure which can escalate with every mistake you make.

Environmental objectives in Above require planning, timing, and nerve, where you must make risk-reward decisions which can be fatal if you choose unwisely.
“ABOVE is a narrative-based, atmospheric psychological horror game set entirely in broad daylight,” reads the blurb on Above.
“You play as Joyce, a lone park ranger stranded beside her disabled car on a remote desert road in Idaho.
“The engine is dead. There is no respite. Only temporary shelter, open ground, and the growing sense that something above you is watching, listening, and waiting.

“Explore the surrounding landscape, discover pieces of a scattered diary and unsettling radio exchanges that slowly piece together a deeply personal and tragic story about family, guilt, and sacrifice. This is a compact, story-driven experience designed to be completed in a single sitting.
“ABOVE favours atmosphere, tension, and emotional impact over traditional horror mechanics, asking not how you fight, but how you endure.”
In its minimalist form, the vibe of Above could be compared to horror experiences such as the various backrooms games that are on Steam right now, as well as other minimal horror experiences such as Unanswered and The Night Is Long.
There are no reviews available yet for Above, but you can check out the game on Steam now by heading to its store page and downloading it from there.
Make sure that your PC can handle it before you download it, though. With photorealistic graphics, it takes quite a beefy machine to be able to run it.
As it happens, the game requires 32 GB of RAM to run at the recommended specs, which in this economy sounds pretty unfortunate. You’ll also need an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics card, and an Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X.
If you can’t run the game at those specs, you may experience issues such as bugs, crashing, or other performance-related problems.
