If you’re worried about your backlog, this new free release won’t take up too much of your time.
Developed by TheGamerUrso and Petros Kitsaras, The Night Is Long is a new indie horror that’s certainly proving popular with PC players over on Steam.
It’s a short title that centres around a grieving man who follows a ghostly vision into an abandoned mansion.
There, he’ll uncover dark secrets, “survive atmospheric horrors”, and confront his past with gameplay consisting of exploration and puzzles.

Oh, and scares, obviously.
It boasts a retro-inspired low poly aesthetic and by the looks of things, this abandoned mansion isn’t particularly well lit so you’ll have to make use of a torch.
That always ups the ante in horror games.
As for what’ll be hunting you down, The Night Is Long describes itself as a Lovecraftian horror, so I’m imagining we’ll see some unsettling monsters.

The vision that lures our protagonist into this manion is actually his ghostly wife, which does make you wonder what personal connection our playable character will have to this locale.
Developers describe the title as “an emotional, story-rich experience”.
There’s “a chilling atmosphere that builds psychological tension” plus “random paranormal events to keep you constantly on edge”.
You’ll have to keep your eye on a sanity system too whilst you’re busy puzzle solving.

The game is totally free-to-play and has already achieved a ‘Positive’ rating on Steam with 90% of players enjoying this experience.
“For a free and short horror experience, the game makes you feel every second. It's a little heavy, a little obscure, but it's also an obviously passionate first project,” read one review.
“A very good horror game to pass the evening. The atmosphere is excellent, and the suspense is done perfectly,” added another.
“The spooky vibes are perfect actually made me jump which I haven't done in a long time so great game,” said one player.

Judging by the ‘hours on record’ of those who left reviews, The Night is Long should be something you can complete in under an hour, although some players took two to three hours.
I suppose it depends how long you spend psyching yourself up to enter a spooky room.
With October almost upon us, this could be the perfect title to get you in the Halloween mood.
There are plenty of other exciting horror games on the way including the likes of Silent Hill f and Little Nightmares III, but The Night is Long is a swift experience you can polish off before or between.
