Wētā Workshop has confirmed that Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 later this month.
To be precise, it’ll land on 25 March which is also Tolkien Reading Day. Whether playing Tales of the Shire is a suitable substitute for reading, I don’t know, but that seems to be the goal here.
Tales of the Shire, of course, first landed last year on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and the original Nintendo Switch.
I played it on Nintendo Switch upon release and, uh, yeah - the graphics left a lot to be desired, so I’m excited at the prospect that the title may now benefit from some visual upgrades.

If you do own that base Nintendo Switch version, you’ll be able to upgrade to claim the new-gen Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade for free.

If this is the first you’re hearing about Tales of the Shire, it’s essentially a cosy life simulation game where players step into the shoes (bare feet?) of a hobbit living in the peaceful town of Bywater.
You’ll partake in the usual cosy fare, which includes cooking, decorating your humble abode, and befriending the locals.
There’s a garden to tend to, fishing to be done, and items to be foraged, plus you can trade with the townsfolk.
The central story sees the residents of Bywater attempt to verify the town’s town status, as it’s suggested that Bywater may be a village.
In order to confirm it’s a town, you’ll need to help restore various societies, activities, and areas.
Tales of the Shire Is In Dire Need of a Redemption Arc, So Could This Be It?
The game didn’t dazzle when it first launched, I’m afraid.
It landed an average score of 59 on MetaCritic for its Nintendo Switch version, with users awarding just 3.9.
I personally awarded the game a score of five.
“Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game doesn’t reinvent the cosy formula, despite several promising glimmers of originality,” my review read.
“Any sign of promise is, unfortunately, cancelled out by mediocrity and an experience that is dominated by untapped potential.
“The game, despite these issues, has undeniable charm but it’s difficult to claim that it’ll resonate and land with the masses.”
I’ll admit, I haven’t touched Tales of the Shire since it launched last summer, but I am aware of the many patches and updates that have come its way.
Perhaps this new-gen upgrade is my excuse to revisit. Has that untapped potential now been unleashed?
