Lord of the Rings Surprise New Fan Game is Well Worth Your Time

Head to Middle Earth in an expansive campaign

First released back in 2015, Total War: Attila became the ninth standalone title in the Total War series but now over a decade on, it has received a new lease of life.

So much so that it has recently hit a concurrent player peak of over 11,000 in recent days, marking the highest number of players since Total War: Attila welcomed a Sega strategy bundle back in 2016.

So why is the turn-based, real-time tactics title getting a revival?

Well, thanks to a dedicated team of modders, Total War: Attila just marked the 1.0 release of an ambitious mod which overhauls the game into a Lord of the Rings fan’s dream.

Titled The Dawnless Days, this mod was first uploaded to Nexus Mods back in 2020 but has since received multiple updates, leading us to the release of version 1.0.

As a result, Total War: Attila players are booting up the game once more to see the arrival of the full War of the Ring campaign which can be enjoyed across an expansive map of Middle Earth.

“The Dawnless Days is a total overhaul mod for Total War: Attila based on the Tolkien Legendarium,” the mod description reads.

“The project brings to life the peoples, places and events of Tolkien's world loved and cherished by fans all around the world, and is set in the time of the great wars of the final years of the main books.”

As of 12 December, the mod includes the aforementioned War of the Ring campaign in full but the modders explain that they hope to gradually populate the desolate and unplayable area of Eriador.

Much More Free Content Is On the Way

Additionally, they plan to add more playable factions and iconic settlements, as well as fleshing out the experience in general so that it is both more enjoyable and true to the source material.

According to a recent post by the development team, they are on the hunt for 2D and 3D artists as well as animators so that just goes to show how much effort they are putting into fleshing out this overhaul mod.

However, as this is a fan-made project, they will not be accepting any donations or else they could risk being issued with a DMCA.

For now, players can enjoy the already established playable factions as well as points of interest that Lord of the Rings fans will recognise straight away.

With many plans for the future, it is clear that this Lord of the Rings-inspired mod for Total War: Attila is perfect for fans of the series which have not received an official game The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria back in 2023.

Or, if I dare mention it, Gollum also in 2023.
