A classic Lord of the Rings game has returned with a new updated expansion, and it’s well worth a play if you’re a fan of the franchise.
When it comes to popular games set within J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth canon, your mind may float to LEGO Lord of the Rings or the rather awesome PS2 movie tie-ins.
However, you’d be missing out on The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth, an adaptation of the three Peter Jackson movies as a real-time strategy game.
While the game has been out-of-print for a long time, and is now considered abandonware, fans have worked hard to preserve the game and even expanded upon it with new content and expansions.

One of these is the rather appropriately named Middle-earth Extended Edition, a mod for The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth that adds new units, heroes, spells and factions, along with revitalising unused features that already existed within the game.
For example, new factions like Elves, Gundabad, and Evil Men, with new units, heroes, and powers coming alongside that.
Although the mod was first released way back in 2012, the latest update has dropped today and brings with it a whole host of new improvements. Altogether, it’s pretty cool to go back and look at the updates that have been released over the years.

Much of the new improvements for Update 1.15 include rebalances to unit health and attack damage, as well as tweaks to AI and game behaviour for a more balanced experience.
Some changes have also been made to campaign levels for an easier time, and tweaks to various game systems have also been implemented.
If you’re a fan of the game (or The Lord of the Rings as a whole), it might be a great time to pick up this mod and check out all of the new changes and updates that have been made to the game over the years. Just be warned that since it dramatically changes up a lot of different features, your experience compared to vanilla may be quite different.
Released in 2004 for PC, The Battle for Middle-earth was unique for allowing you to play as both Good and Evil, with one campaign for each side.
The Good campaign largely followed the events of the movies, while the Evil campaign provided an alternate storyline where you could play as the Orcs and conquer the world.
It was followed up with a sequel in 2006, which also came out for Xbox 360 in addition to PC, and was more an adaptation of content that didn’t appear in the films, focusing on the War of the Ring in the Northern territories of Middle-earth.
While quite dated compared to modern real-time strategy games like Age of Empires IV and Total War: Warhammer 3, it’s a great one to get up and running with mods.
