Uncharted: Drake's Fortune remake rumours get official recognition from Naughty Dog, but not how we hoped

The Tom Holland effect has well and truly reignited the Spider-Man games, but as the famed actor hopped between Brand New Day and The Odyssey sets, he revisited the iconic series that he first adapted, naming Uncharted as the greatest game he's ever played.

The Naughty Dog series has faced renewed interest following Holland's comments, and rumours have resurfaced surrounding a potential remake of the original 2007 game.

Drake's Fortune kicked the franchise off in spectacular fashion, but now faces the conundrum of being outdated as new fans pick up the series for the first time.

Rumours of an Uncharted: Drake's Fortune remake first emerged in 2024, as it was expected to follow suit after The Last of Us Part 1, and even reportedly 'appeared' online in alleged PlayStation 5 files.

But if you had hopes of seeing the Tomb Raider-esque title reappear for PlayStation 5 - or even PS6 - you're going to be pretty upset at recent comments from Naughty Dog designer Benson Russell.

Uncharted dev trashes rumours of a Drake's Fortune remake - 'it doesn't make sense'

Having worked on the first two Uncharted games and still being a part of the Naughty Dog team, Russell claimed that a Drake's Fortune remake 'doesn't make sense' and compared it to the swing-and-miss of System Shock.

"Uncharted as a thing is still in the zeitgeist,” he said in an interview with FRVR.

“System Shock…a remake of that now makes a lot of sense, because not just can you play it, but it had horrible key bindings, it kept a lot of people out of it from wanting to play it."

"There’s already a version [of Drake’s Fortune] you can play on modern consoles [to] get the experience. What’s the point of remastering it?

“I just don’t see the point of remaking it. You’d have to rewrite the whole story to make it better, which means you’re going to change the spirit, and you’re going to change the scenes and what the first one was about, right?

"It doesn’t make any sense. I honestly thought the same thing about The Last of Us Part 1… these are old games for a reason."

"It's more like a cash grab than it would feel like anything necessary at this point. Just don’t recreate the first game. It’s just, eh.”

It's hard to disagree with the designer, especially with PlayStation continuing to support the trilogy.

Despite being a decade on since A Thief's End (the last of the four mainline games), a fifth Uncharted title could be a better way of reigniting the series, and that rumour mill isn't being shut down as eagerly.

If you can't wait for Naughty Dog to make up their mind, former Uncharted devs have joined forces with ex-Call of Duty members to make a new title that combines the two successful worlds.
