Naughty Dog's Uncharted reboot surfaces following The Last of Us franchise update

Speculation on the next Uncharted game has surfaced again following comments from an industry insider, prompting discussion from fans on where the series could head next.

At the moment, Naughty Dog’s core focus is on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, as well as several The Last of Us projects which were confirmed to be in early development by studio head Neil Druckmann earlier this week.

However, nothing has been confirmed on the future of the Uncharted franchise, if there even is one. But a new rumour from industry insider Nate The Hate has pointed to this possibly being the case.

Nate The Hate has shared new information regarding Shaun Escayg’s current project at Naughty Dog.

When asked for details about Escayg’s ongoing project at the company, Nate The Hate responded with, “Minor details but nothing I'm prepared to share at present.”

After being asked if it was related to The Last of Us, he responded that it wasn’t. It’s also not Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, so that rules that out.

This has prompted fans to believe in two possible rumours: either it’s an Uncharted reboot, or a new IP. With Intergalactic being Naughty Dog’s first new IP since 2013, we’re more inclined to believe that this mysterious project may be related to the Uncharted franchise.

Could Shaun Escayg be working on an Uncharted reboot at Naughty Dog?

Escayg worked at Naughty Dog between 2011 and 2018, and is most known for directing Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. After leaving the company, he joined Crystal Dynamics as a creative director and writer, before re-joining Naughty Dog in 2021.

In addition to this mysterious project, Escayg also worked as a creative director of The Last of Us Part 1 (as in, the 2022 remake rather than the original). This could potentially hint at a possible remake of Uncharted as his next project, if Naughty Dog wanted to achieve the same results.

Still, we’re secretly hoping this new project could be a brand new Uncharted game. After all, Escayg did post some very suspicious "research" photos earlier this year from a tropical locale.

The series ended in video game form in 2017 with the release of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and we still reckon there are plenty of avenues for the series to go down.

Since 2017, the series has stayed alive through a movie adaptation starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Victor Sullivan, as well as a remastered collection featuring Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy packaged together for PC and PlayStation 5.

Prior to this, there had been five Uncharted games, four of them starring series’ protagonist Nathan Drake, with the fifth one acting as a spin-off starring Chloe Frazer who was a supporting character in the second and third games.

Released between 2007 and 2017, the Uncharted series has often been cited as one of the best game franchises you can play on PlayStation.
