Uncharted Secret Discovered That We Didn't Know, Game Keeps Delivering

Uncharted is a series that loves to throw in a few cheeky references or secrets to keep things fresh.

One of the all-time best and favourites is a playable Crash Bandicoot level in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. It never gets old.

Naughty Dog’s knack for charming additions to its game goes back years though, all the way to the first Uncharted game which launched in 2007 and even further than that.

In the game’s very first mission, some players might have missed a very humorous way to get a game over screen. In the mission, the player fends off waves of incoming pirates on a boat, but the game’s developers slipped in a little surprise for those brave enough to jump off the boat and do a bit of exploring.

Upon leaping into the water, you’ll float for a bit as incoming enemies take pot-shots at you but you won’t be able to paddle for long.

From under the water a pirate will emerge, grab hold of you and pull you beneath the surface resulting in an “Ambushed” game over screen.

As comical as it is, it’s also quite scary as you’re killed-off in mere seconds, no chance of escape or survival. Apparently this can also happen in later missions where Nathan can go for a dip.

It’s not the only penalty Naughty Dog has made for players who fancy a swim either as in Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, wading through the water will see you come face to face with a shark that’ll try to eat you.

The Uncharted secret specifically is one of many in video games, as loads of developers seem to be dead against the idea of a player taking a swim where they’re not supposed to.

Grand Theft Auto is a good examplen as in GTA V if you venture too far out into the ocean and cross a certain boundary, a shark will devour you.

In the comments of the X post, one commenter shared a similar secret in the Scarface game, which has an entire animation dedicated to the player getting crunched for swimming too far out.

To think after all of this time the Uncharted series still has some secrets to share with us. It makes us want an Uncharted 5 but it’s doubtful that we’ll get one. If it does happen though, I’d love to see this game detail replicated.
