A mix-up regarding a free upgrade to one of 2019’s best RPGs has resulted in outrage, as PS5 gamers were left in the dust earlier this week.
The Outer Worlds developer Obsidian Entertainment announced earlier this month that it would be delisting the base version of the game across all platforms.
This was done to simplify the purchasing process, with players automatically being upgraded to the Spacer’s Choice Edition for free, which includes the game’s two DLC packs along with the base game.
Furthermore, those who hadn’t got around to buying The Outer Worlds now only get one version to buy, the Spacer’s Choice Edition, rather than having to contend with multiple versions and upgrade paths of the same game.

However, as noted by PushSquare, the process was made much more complicated by the fact that players on the base PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game were prompted to pay for the upgrade.

The upgrade was advertised for every platform that had the Spacer’s Choice Edition, which counts as Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. But this did not seemingly include a free upgrade path from PS4 to PS5, or Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S.
This led to an outcry for players who had purchased the last-gen version of the game believing it would grant them a next-gen upgrade for free.
“Apologies for the confusion. Due to unforeseen platform limitations, Xbox One and PS4 digital owners will need to own both DLCs to be eligible for the upgrade,” read a support message from Obsidian after the news spread.
In order to qualify for the upgrade, PS4 and Xbox One players who only owned the base game would have had to fork out £12.99 for the Expansion Pass on the PlayStation Store.
Following the outcry, Obsidian released a statement clarifying this, saying that “If you purchased the base game on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 between 4/30 and 5/27, or have any issues with the upgrade, please contact our support team and we’ll work with you to make it right. Sorry again for the frustration around this.”
The Spacer’s Choice Edition upgrade was intended to say “Thanks” to anyone who purchased The Outer Worlds base game by providing them a free upgrade to the newly improved version. However, due to various entitlement restrictions and backend issues we weren’t able to provide this…

A new Reddit post now claims that owners of the base game on PS4 are now being offered codes for the PS5 upgrade, which includes access to the current-gen version of The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition and all DLCs.
“Not all companies hold accountability for messing up, but this is pretty commendable from Obsidian,” reads the post from user Shower-Jumpy.
“I also faced the exact same issue as many of you by purchasing the base game and getting nothing for it. I ended up contacting Obsidian’s support team and explained my situation to them. They ended up sending me a code for the Spacer’s choice edition. If any of you are still facing the same issue then their support page will do the necessary.”
If you have found yourself in the same boat as other The Outer Worlds players who can’t upgrade from the base PS4 version to the Spacer’s Choice Edition on PS5, it might be worth your while to get in touch with Obsidian Support.
