PS5 RPG Drops Free New-Gen Update, Game on PS Plus

One of Ubisoft's best

PlayStation Plus subscribers are getting a free new-gen upgrade for a simply fantastic RPG, shame the sequel wasn’t as good.

When a game lacks the popularity required to greenlight a remake or remaster a new-gen upgrade usually does the trick. Boosting the framerate to 60 frames-per-second and increasing the resolution before calling it a day is a tried and true method from developers nowadays, and perfect for when you’re wanting to replay a classic like I’ve been doing with Yakuza Kiwami 2.

For PlayStation owners the next game to get the new-gen treatment is a Ubisoft RPG that I sunk a lot of hours into when it first released, it’s just a shame the sequel dropped the ball.

It’s Tom Clancy’s The Division, a multiplayer RPG that deploys you and your friends into a war-torn version of New York called The Dark Zone.

With a mix of PvE and PvP it was a grand success for Ubisoft back in the day and while the follow-up didn’t exactly flop it did fail to keep players as interested.

The Division is currently available at no additional cost with your PlayStation Plus Extra membership and will now benefit from the PlayStation 5 hardware, with enhanced performance at 60 FPS.

I haven’t tried it myself yet but users have reported that it plays like a dream, running smooth and obviously the definitive way to play.

For returning players it’s definitely worth a replay but for those who are new to the game just be cautious that most players will have logged several hours into the game and as such will have the best loot. It’ll be a bit of a slow climb to get to their level but it’s worth it. The DLCs are also worth checking out.

Xbox players will also be able to access this enhanced version of the game, also through their subscriptions.

Certain tiers of Xbox Game Pass come with an added subscription to Ubisoft+ Classics so you should be able to play The Division through that if you don’t own it already.

There are plenty of other Ubisoft games that would benefit from these sorts of upgrades, so hopefully 2026 is a good year for new-gen enhancements. That said, rumour has it that Ubisoft is planning a full-on remake of arguably it’s best game, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. That’s going to run a hell of a lot better than a mere new-gen upgrade would allow.
