PlayStation Plus drops free open-world action RPG that's basically The Walking Dead

It’s pretty impressive that The Walking Dead is still going strong, with plenty of viewing options still available.

Maggie and Negan spin-off Dead City is in the midst of airing its third season in the US, with UK viewers yet to receive a premiere date.

The final season of Daryl Dixon will then debut in 2027, but it’s not known what lies in store beyond that.

You can, however, get a The Walking Dead fix in the world of gaming. There’s something legitimate like Telltale’s The Walking Dead, or you can look further afield to other zombie-centric projects like Days Gone and The Last of Us.

It’s the latter that we recommend you do today, as PlayStation Plus’ extra tier has just gained a fantastic open-world RPG that has a strong The Walking Dead feel to it, Dying Light 2.

Dying Light 2 may have been available for you for a few days already; PlayStation Plus continues to trial its phased rollout in the US, UK, and Japan with Two Point Museum, Metro Exodus, Hell Is Us, Umamusume Pretty Derby - Party Dash, and Dying Light 2 all landing today, on August 25.

Dying Light 2 is, weirdly, also included in this month’s essential tier lineup…so there’s every chance you’ve claimed it already, but at least it’ll be sticking around, I suppose, for those who forget to claim it.

Techland

Developed by Techland, Dying Light 2: Stay Human first landed in 2022. It feels important to note that you don’t need to have played the original Dying Light to enjoy this.

Dying Light 2 is set 20 years after the original entry, so it serves pretty much as a standalone story while also quickly recapping key events.

You might miss out on the odd nod to previous characters, but it’s not the end of the world.

“The virus won, and humanity is slowly dying. You play as Aiden Caldwell, a wandering Pilgrim who delivers goods, brings news, and connects the few remaining survivor settlements in barren lands devastated by the zombie virus,” reads the synopsis.

“However, your true goal is to find your little sister Mia, who you left behind as a kid to escape Dr. Waltz's torturous experiments. Haunted by the past, you eventually make the decision to confront it when you learn that Mia may still be alive in Villedor — the last city standing on Earth.”

Throughout Dying Light 2, you’ll need to fend off your fair share of zombie hordes as you also seek allies in the various settlements you make your way through.

That being said, just as is the case in The Walking Dead, not every human encampment you find will be welcoming…so keep your guard up.

If you’re not already familiar with this franchise, it has a brilliant parkour system, almost offering you a glimpse into what an Assassin’s Creed game might look like set in the midst of a zombie apocalypse.

What’s unique about Dying Light 2 compared to other popular zombie games like The Last of Us entries is that you can team up with friends here; it isn’t limited to being single-player.

Dying Light 2 offers you plenty of hours of entertainment, with the average playthrough lasting for upwards of 40 hours. Completionists often exceed 100 hours.

If you do fall in love with what you play, Dying Light 2 boasts a hefty DLC in the form of Bloody Ties. That isn’t automatically included on PlayStation Plus, but it can be claimed from the PlayStation Store for free.
