PS4 Hit 8/10 Game Prepares to Drop Free New-Gen Port

Coming in December

PlayStation gamers are set to get a new free new-gen port in a couple of weeks, just in time for Christmas.

Thanks to some recent smash hits, the Yakuza series has been one of the most popular franchises for gamers in the past few years.

A lot of newer fans will have started the series with Yakuza: Like A Dragon or its follow-up, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth. However, those earlier games are still well worth checking out.

SEGA has now confirmed a free new-gen upgrade for Yakuza Kiwami 2, the second remake of the PS2’s Yakuza 2.

If you own the PS4 version of Yakuza Kiwami 2, you’ll get access to the PS5 version completely free of charge on 8 December, 2025. This also applies to owners of the Xbox One version who wish to upgrade to the Xbox Series X/S version.

There is a catch though, as SEGA has clarified that this upgrade only exists for owners of the digital version of Yakuza Kiwami 2. Those playing via Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus do not get the upgrade, nor do owners of the physical version.

More Yakuza Games Have Got Upgrades Too

SEGA has also detailed upgrade paths for two other Yakuza games, Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami.

PS5 and Xbox Series X/S can grab the new-gen version of the first Yakuza Kiwami for $1.99. This version of the game should come with some visual improvements, but most notably also comes with two additional songs that were not included in the original release.

Switch 2 users received an upgrade for Yakuza Kiwami earlier this year, receiving a large discount for Switch copies of the game to be upgraded to Switch 2.

Meanwhile, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S owners can also upgrade their older copies of Yakuza 0 to the Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut for $14.99.

This version includes new content, featuring a co-op mode, an English dub, and several new cutscenes. This is why SEGA is charging more for this upgrade, as it’s quite a significant update.

Each of these upgrades also come with new text language support, with French, Italian, German, Spanish, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Russian languages now supported.

It’s also assumed that they will come with performance and visual upgrades too, with Yakuza Kiwami 2 in particular being freed from 30 frames-per-second jail. However, SEGA has not detailed exactly what kind of performance improvements will be added yet.
