State of Play just kicked off in the best way possible, with the surprise announcement of a long-awaited sequel to an incredible PlayStation 4 game.

Before these events, much like the fans, it's normal for us journalists to speculate about what we'd like to see.

"I'd love to know what Ember Lab is working on," I said this very morning. "I adored Kena: Bridge of Spirits."

Well, I am screaming right now because, yes, another instalment is on the way.

Kena: Scars of Kosmora Has Been Announced

Sony has officially announced Kena: Scars of Kosmora in a gorgeous new trailer - and it's launching this year on PC and PS5.

Check out the event's other announcements in our live blog, recapping all of the State of Play's reveals, updates, and trailers.

"After releasing Kena: Bridge of Spirits, we took some time to figure out what we wanted to create next," said Ember Lab's co-founder Josh Grier on the PlayStation Blog.

"We explored ideas that could capture the heart of what made Kena special while building on everything we’d learned along the way. When we began thinking about returning to her world, we were drawn to the idea of Kena as a more experienced Spirit Guide who could use her skills to help the living, not just those who had passed on.

"In Kena: Scars of Kosmora, Kena is older and renowned as a Spirit Guide. In hopes of finding answers to the affliction she has endured all her life, Kena travels to the mysterious island of Kosmora. Home to distinct cultures and regions, Kosmora is full of buried secrets from a tragic past."

Grier goes on to explain that Kena will encounter a dangerous spirit who fractures her staff, with the heroine forced to learn "Kosmora’s forgotten form of Spirit Guiding which uses Alchemy to manipulate the power of the elements".

You might be wondering whether the Rot are returning. Well, the sequel is set to introduce elemental spirit companions which function much in the same way.

"They are charming buddies that travel with you, grow over time, and unlock new powers as your bond deepens. Each spirit is tied to a different element and connected to other spirits that exist throughout the world."

Epic boss fights return with devs explaining that the game's new elemental system really adds a new layer of depth to Kena: Scars of Kosmora's combat system.

Devs don't want to reveal too much about the story yet but promise they've crafted an "emotional and heartfelt" adventure.

The world promises to be larger this time around which is exciting as Kena: Bridge of Spirits was pretty respectable, taking around 10 to 15 hours to complete.

As I said, the game is launching on PS5 and PC this year. What a win.
