Already, 2026 is shaping up to be a genuinely exciting year if you're a video game player, with huge releases in almost every genre that should keep the massed hordes happy for the next 12 months or so.

The release of GTA VI is probably going to be the biggest one for many, but outside of the arrival of that juggernaut, there's some great projects on the way that really deserve your attention moving forward.

007: First Light is on the way in May, whilst Xbox is also set to have a huge year thanks to releases that include some of their biggest franchises ever in Fable, Halo: Campaign Evolved, and Gears of War: E-Day.

That said, PlayStation players also have plenty to be excited about, and one of the more highly anticipated games coming to the platform this year has just given players access to a free demo ahead of release.

As first reported by ComicBook, a demo for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined has just hit the PlayStation Store, available for players to download right now to see if they like what Square Enix is cooking up.

Dragon Quest VII served as the first game I ever played in the series, and it's a brilliant game in its own right, but its fair to say that the developer has made some significant improvements to make it more palatable in 2026.

They have added a ton of quality-of-life features to the game's battle system, including the ability to fast forward through fights against trash mobs to get through to those juicy boss battles more quickly.

At the same time, the artwork has been altered radically, while at the same time retaining the charm of the original style, designed by the legendary artist Akira Toriyama.

For the first time ever, players are also able to take advantage of two vocations at the same time, allowing us to avoid that horrible situation that Dragon Quest previously put us in, in which we'd have to start levelling a new "class" from scratch if we wanted to change things up halfway through.

In my preview for the game towards the end of 2025, I was extremely optimistic about the game's chances, and if it manages to replicate the quality of the recent remake of Dragon Quest I & II, then we're absolutely on to a winner.

You also don't have long to wait for the full game either, with a scheduled release on 5 February.
