Released today and added to the PlayStation Plus library, this brand-new adventure game by the creators of Journey and Abzû has already taken the world by storm.

Developed by Giant Squid and featuring the studio’s trademark stunning art style, Sword of the Sea is an atmospheric surfing game with fast movement inspired by classic skateboarding and snowboarding games.

However, it is so much more than just a surfing game as players can expect a stunning narrative adventure, ethereal environments and smooth gameplay.

“You are the Wraith – resurrected in the desolate Necropolis on a quest to unveil the ancient sea buried beneath the land,” the official synopsis reads.

“Discover the remnants of a lost culture hidden in sinking tombs and skatepark-like ruins as you search for purpose.

Transform sandy dunes into glittering, emerald waters and witness magical sealife return in huge, breathtaking shoals.

Feel the spiritual magic of surfing as you connect with nature and restore life – but beware, there is also darkness lurking under the waves.”

Despite being released less than 24-hours ago, Sword of the Sea has already garnered a score of 89 on Metacritic and with the game already added to the PlayStation Plus library as a day-one release, we can only expect its popularity to grow from here.

With some describing it as “the PlayStation 5’s best game” and others praising its satisfying traversal, heartwarming narrative and impactful gameplay, it seems as though Sword of the Sea will greatly shape up the indie genre when it comes to 2025 releases.

Not only can players expect a skateboarding extravaganza, but they can also embark on an epic quest to restore a lost ocean in a world where the land flows in constant waves.

If you loved Giant Squid’s previous titles such as Journey, Abzû and The Pathless, you cannot miss out on Sword of the Sea.

Sword of the Sea is now available to download on both PlayStation 5 (including PlayStation Plus) and PC.
