PlayStation Plus August addition is the best game its received in years

PlayStation Plus has announced its August batch of freebies, and all things considered it’s going to be a good month.

The comments were still rife with angry gamers accusing PlayStation of killing video games, and the criticism is well-warranted given the brand-destroying action it’s been taking recently.

There’s even talk of a pre-arranged PlayStation 5 ‘blackout’ to show Sony that people mean business. Many subscribers have cancelled their memberships already.

If you’ve cancelled yours it’ll remain active until your next billing date, upon which no money will be taken from your account and your privileges will be revoked. But before that happens we sincerely hope you’ll be able to be one of 2026’s all-timers, which will be featured amongst the August Essential line-up.

Big Walk is going to be more than the next Peak, so it’s not one to miss

The PlayStation Plus Essential games on offer next month are Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Signalis and Big Walk.

They’re all worth checking out, but the latter is a brand-new game being released as a day-one title, which is a rarity for PlayStation’s subscription service.

Made by the same studio behind Untitled Goose Game, Big Walk is exactly what it says on the tin; a game about going on a big, long walk.

Up to 12 players can group up for some co-operative fun, as you wander across the map and see what you can find.

There are no real ‘goals’ to think about. The open-world is massive and filled with interesting stuff to find and play with. Making your own fun is a core part of the experience, but if you’d rather just set up camp by a scenic view and talk about life you’re more than welcome to do that too.

Like all good co-op games nowadays there’s proximity voice chat, and crossplay is supported between platforms so there’s no excuse for not getting some friends together.

Big Walk probably isn’t going to win any Game of the Year awards, but it’s exactly the kind of game that goes viral for all of the right reasons. We think it’s going to be a big hit, so we’re excited to see it available on day-one for those who still have a PlayStation Plus subscription.

It’ll launch for the service on the same day it launches worldwide, August 4, and in addition to PlayStation it’ll be available on Xbox Series X/S and PC and the Nintendo Switch 2.

We’d also suggest trying Dying Light 2: Stay Human, especially when the first game was added to PlayStation Plus Extra this week. Signalis is also a good shout, as it’s one of the best horror games from 2022.

PlayStation still has a lot of work to do if it wants to repair its damaged reputation, and we wouldn’t blame anyone for wanting to cancel their PlayStation Plus subscription and keep it that way.

Before your membership ends, though, try to play as many of these freebies as you can.
