Hogwarts Legacy free download slammed as 'questionable advertising' by fans

Hogwarts Legacy has been featured in a new advertisement for PlayStation Plus, and fans think it’s misleading.

It’s no secret that Hogwarts Legacy has made a lot of money this year. Following its initial release on Xbox, PlayStation and PC platforms, it’s made more money than the Harry Potter films, and it’s still awaiting a release on Nintendo Switch next month.

Recently though, fans were surprised to see it featured on a new advertising banner for Sony’s subscription service, PlayStation Plus.

It was featured alongside Horizon: Forbidden West, and interestingly The Last Of Us: Part II, implying it’ll soon be added to the service either as a free trial for Premium subscribers, or part of the Extra game catalogue.

Bowercw1 shared the advertisement on Reddit saying: “TLOU 2 and Hogwarts Legacy showing up for ‘Deluxe.’ I live in the USA, it’s never been called premium here. Is this a glitch?”

While fans picked apart The Last Of Us: Part II image and what it could mean for the title, Hogwarts Legacy fans theorised their game’s inclusion could be a blatant attempt to mislead those who aren’t subscribed to the service.

After one fan pointed out Hogwarts Legacy is only featured on PlayStation Plus in the form of a measly 45-minute trial, another said: “If so, that picture is some questionable advertising. Some might even call it intentionally misleading.”

Another replied saying: “In any other case I’d agree, but here with the text box accompanying it, it’s clearly mentioning ‘and trial new blockbusters’. If it was alluding to getting full access then yeah that’s scummy, but I don’t think they’re being deceptive here.”

Whether or not Hogwarts Legacy will move across to the Extra game catalogue remains a mystery, though it’s unlikely. Moving over to a subscription service would likely take away from its limited profits, so for now, it’ll likely remain a free trial for Premium PlayStation Plus members.

Hogwarts Legacy is available on Xbox, PlayStation, PC and soon to be, Nintendo platforms.
