Rumours of a new God of War game being announced at The Game Awards are picking up following a cryptic Kratos tease.
The moment God of War was released in 2005 on the PlayStation 2, it became an instant hit.
An always angry protagonist/antagonist (depending on your perspective), Kratos is hell bent on revenge after being tricked by his father, the Greek god Zeus, into killing his wife and daughter.
In a twisted way, the Gods of Olympus had their reasons for doing what they did to Kratos and his family, but it’s one that they instantly regret, I’m sure. God of War would then spawn multiple sequels, spin-offs and remasters.

In 2018, Santa Monica Studio went with a slightly different direction with God of War, which can be considered as somewhat of a soft reboot for the series.
Sure, it still had fun combat, stunning visuals and an angry Kratos, but it favoured a more cinematic approach and an over-the-shoulder camera perspective.
Kratos is also a lot more chill, living somewhere in Scandinavia with his new wife and son. However, as you can imagine, while it worked for a time, for some reason, Gods can't help to poke this proverbial bear. One day, they might learn to leave him alone, but that would mean no more games. So poke away, silly gods!
We Need More God Of War!
As for The Game Awards, speculation is often at its highest in the industry at this time of the year, and the God of War series is no exception, which leads us to this tease.
The Twitter user elesnicho, shared an image that at first glance, I thought was a close-up shot of the moon, but it appears that I was wrong. It is seemingly Kratos’s slap head.
There’s really not much to go on here, and there’s a really good chance that this tease is meaningless and could purely exist for social engagement. If that is the case, then good job, it’s worked. However, that hasn't stopped fans from speculating that a God of War remake might be on the way.
“God of War remake at The Game Awards?” replied OhMyKCrane.
“It’s the Prime Video casting announcement,” claimed Asepirawan, referring to the already announced God of War series.
It’s not the first time rumours have circulated on the internet with talk of a remake, remaster or a follow-up to 2022’s God of War Ragnarök.
Fans were hoping that such an announcement would be made this year to celebrate the series' 20th anniversary, but all we’ve had so far is an uninspired DualSense controller. Yet, 2025 isn't quite done, so there’s still time for something big to happen.
At least we’ll know either way by Friday, whether or not God of War will be at The Game Awards in whatever capacity it may be.
