Assassin's Creed: Project Jackdaw is the Black Flag remake we long for

A pirate's life for me

Something nearly all Assassin's Creed fans want to see is a remake of Black Flag, the pirate adventure that seemed to perfect ship combat and encapsulate the pirate life better than many.

One fan is going to great lengths to recapture that feeling of living on the high seas with their idea, ProJect Jackdaw, also known as The Jackdaw. It's their aim to remake the sailing and ship combat that so many loved, within Unreal Engine 5.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag is one of the most popular iterations of the franchise.

The project was originally posted to Reddit over a year ago but it seems to still be making good progress. In the footage by u/Captain_Lindemann, we can see Edward Kenway scurrying around via parkour, dashing towards his ship where he gets behind the wheel and takes out to the sea.

The details in the ship and the water are staggeringly gorgeous and the sway of the ship as it is moved by the wind has been perfectly captured. The creator is quick to mention that they are not affiliated with Ubisoft and will be swapping the game assets out when they have their own ready. While this isn't a proper remake of Black Flag, its goes some way to show what a UE5 update would look like should Ubisoft ever begin to remake their Assassin's Creed games.

More recent updates to their YouTube channel show a lot of progress, particularly in the physics engine and how the ships interact with the ocean. The footage is drawing comparisons not just to Assassin's Creed, but also to Skull and Bones, another Ubisoft title that is perpetually shown and then delayed.

Fans of pirate games have been clamouring for something new to fill the void, and it seems that if this project ever becomes playable, it will go a long way towards that.
