Assassin's Creed: Black Flag free remaster is a sight to behold

Raytracing and all sorts

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag has been given a much-needed facelift 12 years after the original release.

First launched in 2013, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remains one of the most popular Assassin’s Creed games to date.

And if you ask me, it still holds up visually too. It’s a game that had such a timeless art style that the power of modern PCs and consoles doesn’t necessarily mean that Black Flag needs an official remaster from Ubisoft.

However, a few touch-ups here and there to really squeeze as much juice out of your graphics cards as possible won't hurt.

One Assassin’s Creed fan in particular has done this by adding raytracing to Black Flag, alongside an Ultra graphics preset and 4K resolution to make the visuals pop out.

YouTuber Digital Dreams uploaded a new video last week showcasing some gameplay from Black Flag with graphics mods installed, and it’s nothing short of a miracle.

The gameplay shows the player walking through Havana, one of the major locations in Black Flag, and we get a glimpse at how the mods affect texture quality, lighting, rain effects, and other visual markers.

We also see a little bit of combat and parkour. The gameplay hasn’t been touched at all, so the original Black Flag experience remains preserved. The mod simply gives some enhancements to the visuals.

It’s very impressive, to put it frankly. I’m still not convinced the game needs a full-on remaster from Ubisoft, but these little touch-ups really help to make the work from the original artists pop out.

Digital Dreams has a link to the mods in their video description, but you should be warned that while Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is an older game, you’ll need to have a modern PC to run all these enhancements.

If Ubisoft does ever actually remaster Black Flag, as rumour may have it, this mod will give it a run for its money.
