The upcoming Master Collection version of Metal Gear Solid 4 appears to have left out a pretty major feature.
At the Sony State of Play on Thursday, Konami announced the second volume of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection, featuring Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Peace Walker.
Both Guns of the Patriots and Peace Walker are considered great games by the Metal Gear community, so it’s especially good news to see them ported to modern systems.
This goes especially for MGS4, which was previously stuck in PS3 jail and wasn’t available on any other system, not even via PlayStation Plus Classics streaming on PS5.

However, one popular feature of Metal Gear Solid 4 appears to be left out of the Master Collection version: the multiplayer.

Titled Metal Gear Online, the multiplayer mode that came bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4 was very popular back in its day.

Utilising the gameplay of its single-player counterpart, Metal Gear Online allowed up to 16 players to engage in online tactical warfare in a variety of different modes.
“METAL GEAR SOLID 4: Guns of the Patriots - Master Collection Version of the Patriots does not include METAL GEAR ONLINE,” confirms Konami on the official website.
I haven’t touched Metal Gear Online since it was taken offline in 2012, but I still strongly remember playing Stealth Deathmatch on repeat, essentially the precursor to what we now know as Battle Royale games.
There were also loads of other modes present in the game, like Bomb Mission (similar to Counter Strike's Bomb Defusal) and Rescue Mission, essentially a twist on Capture The Flag.
With so much variety, Metal Gear Online quickly became a favourite for online PS3 gamers.
It’s now been almost fifteen years since Metal Gear Online was shut down, but I know a lot of fans would have loved to see it revived for the Master Collection version. So it’s such a shame to see it won’t be included here.
All is not lost though, as Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker’s co-op multiplayer mode remains intact on the Master Collection. These missions can be played with up to four players overall, but exact functionality remains unclear right now.
The Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 releases on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on 27 August, 2026.
