The upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4 remaster proves why it’s still the G.O.A.T in brand new footage.
When it comes to being an iconic video game series, Konami’s Metal Gear Solid is somewhere at the top of that list, especially when it comes to stealth espionage. From the mid-80s to the present day, fans have been on one hell of an emotional rollercoaster with the likes of Solid Snake and Naked Snake.
It’s why, no doubt, fans are eager for a brand new entry in the Metal Gear Solid series, or at least, a remake of the iconic PlayStation game from 1999, taking us to the memorable location of Shadow Moses, with Solid Snake battling it out against his clone twin, Liquid Snake.
We’ve been treated to so many bangers over the years that fans of the Metal Gear Solid series could debate all day as to which is the best. The chances are that not only will the OG trilogy be a hotbed of discussion, but so too will the topic of today’s discussion, 2008’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
In February 2026, a long-awaited remaster of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was announced, part of the Master Collection Vol. 2, which also includes Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, as well as other bundled bonuses. Both will also be available for individual purchase.

What makes this release so particularly special is that, unlike other games in the MGS series, Metal Gear Solid 4 was only ever released on the PlayStation 3, which meant that millions of fans across the world never got to appreciate its gameplay and storytelling greatness.
Ahead of its release in just four months, Konami has been building up the hype by teasing us with trailers and gameplay presentations, and the most recent gameplay presentation this week confirmed the release of an old tech friend.

As brought to our attention by Wario64, on the Japanese YouTube channel, ‘Mafia Kajita and Yuichi Nakamura's Washagana TV’, we were treated to roughly an hour of new gameplay for the Metal Gear Solid 4 remaster, and the return of the iPod was confirmed.
In case you didn't know, the iPod was a music tech device that could play hundreds to thousands of digital music tracks to listen to on the go. This was during a time when mobile phone capabilities weren't what they are today.
The first iPod launched in 2001 and had a long run before the most recent model was released in 2019, at which point, the concept was long obsolete. When Metal Gear Solid 4 was originally released in 2008, this would have been during a time when the iPod would have been at the peak of its popularity. The iPod can be seen just after 44 minutes into the video.
The reason being, is that this is a remaster with no changes to its story, location and gadgets. It will have improved visuals and performance, as well as some likely gameplay tweaks, but this is basically a remaster in its purest form, which means that the iPod has gone nowhere.
“Genuinely surprised they managed to get permission from Apple!” exclaimed sleepingheart.
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 will be released on 27 August 2026 on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
