Nintendo 64 classic quietly being revived for modern consoles

Nintendo 64 classic quietly being revived for modern consoles

Return of the King

An N64 classic is headed to Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 this year, and it’s an absolute banger as well.

As a fan of the classics, I love it when a beloved, retro title is re-released for new and old fans alike, and 2025 marks the return of some of the greats.

It's not the only Nintendo 64 game now on PC either, as Star Fox 64 is available now as well.

Not only are we seeing mascot characters like Gex and Croc making a comeback, we’re now getting the criminally underrated Doom 64 re-released for current-gen hardware.

Now technically you could play Doom 64 on your Xbox, PlayStation and even Nintendo Switch already, but according to the ESRB, standalone native Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 versions of the game are on the way.

It’s worth noting that this will still be the 2020 remaster developed by Nightdive Studios, not the original version.

The game has been rated which is usually a clear indication that it’s launching soon, but there’s no official word on this yet.

It’s one of a few Nintendo 64 games that have been given a new lease on life, with one of the big ones being GoldenEye 64 which was re-released for all platforms last year, multiplayer intact.

Like I said before, I love it when older games like this get another chance to shine, as without re-releases like this, the only way to play these games is to get an original copy, which can be hard to find and expensive, or emulate which isn’t legal.

In other Doom-related news, some mad lads online have converted the original game into what can only be described as its strangest form yet, an interactive art gallery where Doomguy swaps his Super Shotgun for a glass of wine and peruses fine art.
