The last two Legend of Zelda games have been absolute bangers, and anyone that disagrees with that fact is, frankly, wrong.

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom did so much to rejuvenate the series for the Nintendo Switch generation and they will likely serve as a cornerstone experience for many for years to come.

It's little surprise then that thoughts are now beginning to turn to what comes next, particularly with the increased hardware capabilities of the Switch 2. Sure, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment will keep us entertained for a while, but the hack and slash gameplay isn't for everyone and we'll need a true Zelda experience before long.

Over on Reddit, one user shared their ideas for the next game in the series, calling on the developer to take Wind Waker as their inspiration and introduce more in the way of ocean exploration and islands.

Several responses to the post agreed with the OP, to a point, with one saying, "I'd love to see dramatic improvement from the way water navigation was treated in the Wild games, but I don't know that I want to see an entire ocean based world again. I'd love to see proper movement above and below water (either by transformations, vehicles, or regular old swimming mechanics), but I wouldn't want to see a greater emphasis than, say, the Great Bay area of MM, or the Lakebed and Lake Hylia of TP."

Others took the opportunity to share their own ideas for what they'd like to see, and they had some pretty drastic options to put on the table.

"My overarching wish for the next mainline Zelda is to make it linear again with dungeons. It could be open world, but it needs linear dungeon progression. I miss the creativity of dungeon puzzles based on the available weapons/abilities. By having it be open and any order means the developers can’t be anywhere near as creative because they can’t assume what your capabilities are," another said.

Another was even more outlandish with their requests for the developer, saying, "It’s time for the franchise to do a legend set in space. We are already part there from all the technology they’ve been introducing."

Whatever the developers do decide to do with the next Zelda game, it's fair to say that they have built up more than enough goodwill with the last two games to be given a chance.
