With the Nintendo Switch 2 just over a week away, Nintendo fans are hyped for the next-gen Zelda game the console could bring.
The Nintendo Switch had a few The Legend of Zelda games released during its time. There were the two “open-air” (what Nintendo calls its open worlds) games, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, as well as Echoes of Wisdom in 2023.
The Switch also saw a remake of Link’s Awakening and a new remaster of Skyward Sword, so Nintendo has been pretty busy decking out the Zelda adventures available on the console.

And it looks like that may not change for the Switch 2 either, as Nintendo has already announced next-gen upgrades for both open-air games in the franchise.
Now, Nintendo fans are dreaming up what the next big main Zelda game could look like with the power of the Switch 2 behind it, and it’s getting us all hyped.
Over on the True Zelda Reddit page, a post asked users what they’d like to see in the next mainline open-air The Legend of Zelda game.
“Personally, I mostly just want it to be different than BotW,” wrote the opening post. “I like BotW a lot, but TotK was hurt by being too similar, down to using the same map.

“While the next open air game will obviously have a different map, I'm worried that it will still stick too close to BotW and basically wind up being the same game but with a new map, abilities, and characters.”
Replies to the post had their own interpretations for what they’d like to see in our first Zelda adventure on the Switch 2.
“I want dungeons to be item gated, but in a more open way,” wrote one comment. “Like instead of having each dungeon require the specific item before it, maybe the hookshot could unlock two dungeons or something like that to allow for a more flexible sequence without it being completely linear or flat.”
“I want them to do away with the whole shrine concept and return to dungeons and caves,” another comment wrote, to which many agreed. “30-50 real meaty dungeons are way more satisfying than 150 shrines and five wannabe dungeons.”

A third comment simply wrote: “Underwater exploration. Please.”
That last suggestion would be on my wishlist. If Nintendo is keen on turning the open-world Zelda games into a trilogy, it’s the next logical step.
After all, the first game lets you explore the surface of Hyrule. Its sequel takes you high into the sky and low into the underground caverns. It’s only natural that the third game should let you go explore underwater.
We’re still probably a few years away from hearing about the next big Zelda game. Tears of the Kingdom launched in 2023, and Echoes of Wisdom in 2024, so those two are still quite freshly released.

It will, however, be the series’ 40th anniversary next February. So it’s always possible we could hear about a new game by then.
