The Legend of Zelda fans are heartbroken by a surprise announcement, as the wait for a new game continues.
Although Nintendo Switch 2 users have been enjoying the new upgrades to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, the wait for a brand new game is going to be a while.
Earlier this week, it was announced that a Nintendo Direct would take place later today, on 31st July, 2025.
Exciting news for some, especially now that it’s been nearly two months since the Switch 2 launched, and we haven’t had a general Nintendo Direct for quite a while.

Unfortunately, Zelda fans are going to have to wait a little bit longer, as it appears the Nintendo Direct later today will just be a Partner Direct.
That means all the games being showcased during the stream will be from third-party developers rather than Nintendo itself, leaving Zelda fans heartbroken.
“Might be a bit more intersting than the average Partner Showcase but still disappointing that it isnt a general Direct,” wrote a fan on the Nintendo Switch Reddit page.
“I truly think now they are doing news for 1st party games exclusively on Nintendo Today until we get through all the games shown in the Switch 2 Direct,” wrote one commenter on the Nintendo Switch 2 Reddit page. “I expect Kirby, Zelda, and Metroid trailers and release dates to be shown there at this point.”

However, it’s not all doom and gloom for Zelda fans, as there’s still a chance that Hyrule Warriors could still be shown, as one comment highlighted.
The Hyrule Warriors series is a collaboration between Nintendo and Koei Tecmo. A third game, titled Age of Imprisonment, is also confirmed to be in development. And its predecessor Age of Calamity also made an appearance at an earlier Nintendo Partner Direct, so there’s a chance we might actually see Age of Imprisonment here.
“I am happy there is a Direct coming but I do wish they were going to have some first party items... I am assuming they will show Hyrule Warriors since it is kinda a partner project,” they wrote.
Hopefully we’ll get to hear about the next Zelda game very soon, but with Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4 to still look forward to this year, there’s still quite a lot to look forward to.
