The Legend of Zelda fans are excited over the series’ 40th anniversary, following a recent update from Nintendo.
Zelda is one of Nintendo’s most successful franchises, and with a film adaptation set for release in 2027, it sounds like the series’ popularity is about to explode.
And it seems as though Nintendo could potentially be planning to release some remasters to commemorate the series’ 40th anniversary, at least if it does the same here as it did for Mario.
Last week, Nintendo released Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Switch, and it’s caused lots of buzz surrounding Mario’s 40th anniversary, and fans believe Nintendo could be planning the same for Zelda.

That’ll be next year by the way, which marks 40 years since The Legend of Zelda’s debut back in 1986. And yes, I crumbled into dust after writing that sentence.
Over on Reddit, one fan says the remaster of the Super Mario Galaxy games has given them “hope” for the 40th anniversary of Zelda.
“Reworked textures and improved resolution on both games, one that was already re-released on Switch with 3D All Stars mind you, and the other that was considered forgotten for years,” they begin the post with.
“All that sets a precedent that gives me hope for 3D Zelda games. I’m old enough to know what it was like to get that one GameCube disk with four Zelda games included. I am now more confident than ever that we will see another Zelda collection in 2026.”

Some fans in the comments agreed, saying that it makes “too much sense” for Nintendo to do this.
“Seeing how Galaxy 1+2 were handled shows Nintendo will bring back classics if the timing is right,” writes one fan in the replies. “With the Zelda movie coming and the 40th anniversary, it makes too much sense for them to package Ocarina, Majora’s Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess in some form. Even just upscaled 3DS versions of OoT and MM would be amazing.”
“The fact that no one has mentioned A Link Between Worlds yet is an absolute shame,” writes another. “We don't need OoT or MM remastered. We need a way to play arguably one of the best 2D Zeldas of all time. I don't even like 2D Zelda games, but A Link Between Worlds was next tier.”
Nintendo has not confirmed its plans for the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda yet. I imagine we’ll know more once we get much closer to the date, which occurs in February.
