GTA 6 announcement slammed as 'damage control' by disappointed fans

As much as fans love Rockstar for the games it creates, they also spot when clever marketing is used to ease their upset

After years of fans attempting to accept appeasement after appeasement from Rockstar Games, fans are unable to brush off the disappointing “damage control” that the devs have attempted in the past.

We’re, of course, referring to the February 2022 Rockstar announcement that pretty much teased that GTA 6 was in the works, only for no major information to be revealed since. As one Redditor pointed out, the announcement came at a time when the devs were trying to ease the backlash it faced over the GTA Trilogy Defective Edition, with its decision to mention GTA 6 nothing more than a bid to distract fans.

What we know so far about GTA 6 – watch it now!

But is anyone surprised by this? The unanimous answer on Reddit is no. “What announcement? Saying they're working on the next GTA game? Lol you don't say!” said ImpressWindow. The sarcasm is palpable, as is the annoyance that fans feel at being left in the dark for so long. It’s very bleak in the barren wastes of a fandom that feels forgotten – those of us who waited and waited for Dragon Age: Inquisition to officially be announced, and then had to cope with numerous delays, know it well.

Here’s the thing, though, there’s a lot riding on this game for Rockstar. The devs, and its parent company Take Two, have faced a lot of backlash recently, especially over the RDR port, and so it makes sense that it continues to focus efforts on making GTA 6 the best it can be. And when you look at the “insane” screenshots from the upcoming game, it almost looks too good to be true. Unfortunately, like with any leak, fans need to approach them with caution, as what they see might not be the full picture or true at all. Still, leaks keep hope alive, and this fandom really needs it right now.

As frustrating as this has been, and still is for many, one Redditor pretty much said what we’re all thinking – “All will be forgotten when they do actually announce it.” Never have truer words been spoken; we might all be ticked off at the moment, but the second an official announcement reveals everything we’ve hoped for, forgiveness will pour out of us like irate tangents by upset idiots demanding refunds.

All anyone can do is wait for that day to come – the reveal, not more rants – and pray that Rockstar delivers exactly what they’ve teased for the last decade. If not, we anticipate one heck of a riot on the internet that day…
