Assassin’s Creed or Journey fans may enjoy this new PlayStation Plus game hitting the service next week.
PlayStation Plus is a great service if you’re the kind of gamer who enjoys playing a variety of different genres. There’s simply so many diverse games on there.
One minute you can be playing a first-person shooter, and the next you’re getting stuck into a massive 80-hour RPG. There’s so much to play.
A new game coming to PlayStation Plus next week looks like it should appeal especially to Assassin’s Creed or Journey fans, and is certainly one to put on your radar.

Sword of the Sea is a new game from Giant Squid, the developer behind the excellent AA games Abzu and The Pathless. The studio is also made up of several former Journey developers, so the inspiration is pretty clear.
It’s a fantasy game described as “an atmospheric adventure”, where you surf across an empty land in order to meet your goal, and it features some absolutely breathtaking art.

Considering the studio’s previous games, and the obvious Journey connections, expect it to be a mostly wordless narrative, relying on visuals and audio to tell the story and keep the pace.
Giant Squid cites surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding as the main inspiration for Sword of the Sea’s movements. As you explore this gorgeous world, you build up speed and pull off various flips, spins, and tricks from the environment.
The developer calls the game a “perfect balance of exhilarating action and fluid, meditative movement,” and we can absolutely see this will be the case.
Sword of the Sea releases on PC and PS5 next week, on 19th August 2025. It’ll be added to the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers, so subscribers can access it for no extra charge.

As for Xbox and Switch owners, while nothing has been confirmed yet, it’s worth bearing in mind that Giant Squid’s previous two games debuted on PlayStation consoles before coming to Xbox and Nintendo systems much later.
So, it’s entirely possible we’ll see it come out for Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 in the future.
