The Fallout franchise naturally has its fair share of horrifying secrets – it goes hand-in-hand with exploring a post-apocalyptic world.

Despite knowing this, there are still discoveries that end up sending a chill down our spines.

While Fallout players killing every NPC in sight can be unnerving in its own way, this find feels more sinister in nature because of the implications of its meaning.

We doubt you'll see anything this creepy in Fallout 76: Milepost Zero - Country Road, but you never know

On the Fallout subreddit, user ZephyrHeartz shared a screen capture of an unsettling secret.

As shown in the image, there are lunchboxes with kids' faces on them.

The OP remarked, “I’ve put countless hours in FO4 and just now noticed the kids’ faces in lunchboxes.”

Plenty of other Bethesda players have missed this curious detail before, with this discovery now leading them to wonder about their meaning.

As this is Reddit, the jokes started in earnest.

“Rumour has it this is the ghost of the child Todd sacrificed so that things would ‘just work’,” quipped GhostOfTheMojave6.

This joke continued on its dark trajectory with another fan saying, “He's the ghost in the code that makes the games randomly f**k up.”

Although we know this isn’t true, you can bet your last bottle cap we’re going to proceed with caution if we find this during our next playthrough of Fallout 4.

Before any questions regarding the validity of this secret arise, specifically whether it’s come from the use of mods, another individual already queried this with the OP.

According to ZephyrHeartz, they only ever play “vanilla”, meaning that this should be a discovery you can make for yourselves, if you feel the need to see the haunted expressions of children in boxes.

The next time you wander the Wasteland, make sure to check your surroundings, a small child’s last impression on this world may be watching you.
