CD Projekt Red has recommended starting a new save file on Cyberpunk 2077 for one very important reason.

It’s a good month for Cyberpunk 2077 fans. This week the new 2.0 Update will drop for all players on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC, and will be followed by the new DLC expansion Phantom Liberty.

The new expansion will add an entirely new area to the game, Dogtown, as well as take V and Johnny Silverhand on a new story adventure, where they’ll meet several new characters, most notably Solomon Reed who’s played by Idris Elba. You can’t romance him though so don’t even try.

Before that, the base game for Cyberpunk 2077 is getting an upgrade, introducing several new and improved features that fans have been begging for since launch. That being said, CD Projekt Red has a warning for all those planning on hopping back into the game once the update drops.

Speaking via its official Twitter, the developer said: “Hey, chooms! While you'll be able to continue the game with your current character on an existing save, we recommend starting a new game after Cyberpunk 2077's Update 2.0. Due to the number of changes, starting fresh will enhance your overall gameplay experience!”

While you don’t need to start a new save file, the update makes several changes to the gameplay and skill tree found in the game, so starting over from scratch will give you a much better chance of experiencing all the new content.

The Phantom Liberty expansion also doesn’t require you to beat the game in order for it to be accessible, just that you progressed past a certain act, so you could use any save file provided you’ve made it past Act Two's 'I Walk The Line' Quest.

Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 launches on 21 September, with the Phantom Liberty expansion launching on 26 September.
