'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Deepfake Seamlessly Replaces Ewan McGregor With Alec Guinness
One talented YouTuber has edited the late Alec Guinness over scenes from Obi-Wan Kenobi, and it works so well.
We’re over halfway through the Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+ now, and so far, it’s safe to say that it’s been going down super well. Beyond it just giving us more juicy Star Wars content (because, let’s face it, you can never really get enough of that), the thing that many fans were excited for from the beginning was the fact that Ewan McGregor would be reprising his role, 17 years since his last on-screen appearance as the titular character.
Obviously, McGregor looks a lot older in Obi-Wan Kenobi than he did in the prequel trilogy (the unending passage of time will do that to you), which also means he’s a lot closer in age to the legendary Alec Guinness’ version of the character in the original trilogy. Clearly, that’s made a few fans wonder what the series would be like had Guinness been able to take on the role himself, and thanks to an impressive deepfake video, we can now see exactly how that would look.

As reported by ComicBook, the video was made by YouTuber stryder HD, and beyond it being amazing to see the late Guinness back on screen (in a fashion), it’s also mind-blowing just how uncanny the resemblance between him and McGregor is. Genuinely, just take a look at the side-by-side comparisons in the video - it seems like there’s hardly any difference between the two. If that doesn’t prove that McGregor was an immaculate casting choice, I don’t know what will.
Despite how well the edit works, though, I think most people can probably agree that the series is much better off with McGregor in the role, rather than a CGI version of Guinness. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker both attempted similar feats to bring back Carrie Fisher and Peter Cushing, and were criticised at the time, both due to the uncanny valley effect that the CGI produced, and also the ethics of reviving late actors - it’s no wonder that it wasn’t attempted again for this series).
