'No Man's Sky' Isn't Finished "By A Long Shot", Says Sean Murray

The 19th major update for No Man's Sky, Sentinel, is about to launch and studio founder Sean Murray has said it's not done "by a long shot".

No Man's Sky released in 2016 to a wave of disappointment. This was due to the large number of features which founder of Hello Games, Sean Murray, promised at launch, and was simply unable to delivered on. Promised game play elements such as thousands of unique alien types, turned out to be procedurally generated nightmares, alien factions turning on or trusting you is only true if they have the mind of a dog, and being able to see other players like in Journey was a work of complete fiction.

Unlike almost every other game which launches only to despair, No Man's Sky actually managed to make the comeback of a lifetime. The upcoming update will be the 19th major one in the six years since release, and as of now they have over delivered on their previous failed promises. The Beyond update released in 2019 essentially manufactured a whole new game, and then by the 2021 Prism update, the game finally looked like what fans were promised at launch. People noticed, and soon after the tides turned on No Man's Sky's reviews from overwhelmingly negative to mostly positive.

If you're curious to see how the game has progressed, you can check out some gameplay from the Expedition 4 Emergence update below.

Hello Games is already working on another project which it won't talk about, with Murray claiming to have learnt his lesson from No Man's Sky. Despite already working on the next big thing, in an interview with IGN, Murray also claims that there is still "bucket list items" and "finer detail" to fill in with their turn around title.

"As many updates as we've done since launch and as many bucket list items [as] we've checked off, our list of things we're excited about never seems to get any shorter" Murray said. "I like to think that No Man's Sky is such a large game that we have to paint in broad brush strokes, and then each update comes along and fills in some finer detail but also paints more new broad strokes."

The new update, Sentinel, will bring a big overhaul to enemies and combat. It looks like Hello Games is building on the tail of the game rather than launching into territories unknown.
