Halo Gamers Heartbroken Over Cancelled Game

This series deserves better

Halo fans are mourning a game that never was, and likely never will be given the new direction the series is heading in.

The Halo franchise looks like it’s going to get a full-on reboot after several stumbles from Halo Studios.

With rumour of a Halo: Combat Evolved remake it feels like Halo Studios is looking to start over from scratch, which makes this canned game even more painful to think about.

Halo Wars was an excellent spin-off from the mainline games and while Halo Wars 2 had a few minor problems here and there it felt like a great sequel and introduced some excellent story content, especially The Banished.

Despite its successes Halo Wars 3 has never been brought up and it likely never will, as Halo Wars 2 writer Dion Lay has explained how they would have loved to see a third game be developed.

Speaking on the FRVR Podcast Lay said “I wish we [did a third game] because, I remember, like the second one, the DLC, I think we really nailed it like that. I think that DLC [Awakening the Nightmare] we, as a team, really nailed it that time.

“We kind of really knew what we were doing. We made things so much tighter, I think the story is loads better, it’s just really cool.”

They later added that they were “pretty gutted we didn’t make another one as well.”

The news was shared online by fans and was met with predictable disdain for the way Microsoft has handled the IP.

“In general it's baffling how MS is totally fine with releasing mediocre Halo titles every 5-6 years instead of building up the universe with multiple titles at the same time” said one disgruntled fan.

Another added “Nearly a decade later and there’s no indication that the cliff hanger ending will ever be resolved but I think even worse the mystery of who opened the portal to bring the Spirit Of Fire to the ark has never been answered.”

DLC was originally on the cards to continue Halo: Infinite’s story but were reportedly scrapped, so perhaps one of them would have seen the Spirit Of Fire emerge over the Halo ring to support Chief in his war against Atriox.

It would have been cool either way so it’s a shame nothing ever became of it, and with the series seemingly on the edge of getting a reboot there might not be any room for Halo Wars alongside other potential spin-offs.
