Few can argue with just how groundbreaking the original Halo games were when they debuted as an OG Xbox exclusive all the way back in 2001. How has it been almost a quarter of a century since then?
That trilogy did most things right and Master Chief's story was forever carved into the pantheon of great gaming tales, regardless of whether it was the kind of game you were usually into.
Since then, things have been considerably more volatile, and for every nice feature in a new release, there's at least one major drawback that proved to detract from the overall experience.
Regardless of how bad you think the problem is, the series needs a bold direction to bring it back to the top, and fans have been debating exactly the best way to go about it.

Over on Reddit, one user asked what the community would like to see in the next mainline release, and there were some interesting suggestions from longtime players.
"Campaign needs to have replay value and a rich story. Each mission should have different biomes and architecture. We were stuck in the first level of Halo CE for the entirety of Halo Infinite. It was super cool at first but what makes Halo is going from a unsc ship to urban cities to the jungle to forunner installations to derelict ships to alien planets," one comment read.
Another echoed concerns around the campaign, saying, "I want the campaign to have epic moments. I’m talking cutscenes on the level of hype as Halo 2-4, with massive scale battles both in cutscenes and gameplay. The story needs to have memorable moments as well."
They continued, "Nothing beats that scene in 2 with Chief giving the covenant back their bomb; or 3 when we see human ships firing on the Keyship; or 4 when we see the Infinity falling out of the sky. Infinite had amazing gameplay and actually a pretty decent story but the lack of scale and memorable moments left me feeling like it was only a game I would only play once for the gameplay."

Others want to see more tangible changes to the systems in the game. "Split screen co-op. Less micro transactions/make armour and cosmetics unlockable through game play. Don't require supplementary material to understand the campaign/story. Put it in a cutscene," said one gamer.
Whatever direction the developers do decide to go in with the next Halo game, it's going to be difficult to recapture the old magic.
Perhaps the answer lies in not trying to replicate it, but giving players something new that they can keep returning to for years to come.
