No Man’s Sky drops ‘biggest and craziest’ free 10th anniversary update, includes huge expedition

No Man’s Sky is in the midst of celebrating its 10th anniversary, with the team at Hello Games previously teasing the arrival of the special COSMOS update.

Well, that update is now live, introducing the 7.0 version of No Man’s Sky.

“Thank you for helping us celebrate our 10th Anniversary last month. It was emotional to hear people’s stories and memories from playing over the years,” Hello Games’ Sean Murray said in a press release.

“We feel lucky to still be able to do big crazy things with No Man’s Sky after 10 years, and our next update COSMOS is one of our biggest and craziest!”

He continued, “In most sci-fi games, space is just an empty void. With COSMOS we wondered - can we make space feel truly alive? And could we make space feel more like home? What if you could own a Space Station? If you could build star bases, and create alliances with other players.”

Star Maps will reveal tons of new points of interest

When players now warp to a star system, the best recommended course of action is to open up the Star Map which will reveal points of interest, plenty of which lead to “new stands of missions”, according to developers.

Hulks offer a new way to acquire salvaged materials

No Man’s Sky is now home to “space hulks”, which you can strip and salvage, following on from the Remnant update which launched in February.

You can use the physics gravity gun to strip hulks of metal although if you’re too greedy, hulks have a tendency to destabilise and could even explode.

It's recommended that players scan hulks in order to unearth the best potential rewards.

New outposts await in Update 7.0

There are several new outposts in this latest update where you can trade with a variety of alien lifeforms, perhaps selling your newly acquired rewards from those aforementioned hulks.

At these traders, you can buy maps and acquire intel on the narby area, perhaps even picking up new missions.

Bio-wrecks offer a fun new twist on space wrecks

There are plenty of wrecked ships you can find throughout No Man’s Sky. From today, you can also stumble upon bio-wrecks.

These facilities specifically have been overwhelmed by biological hazards so you’ll have to work carefully as you seek to clear and reclaim them.

Unearth new resources in asteroid belts

Alongside hulks, players can now also get new resources from asteroid belts, formed by rock and ice.

Within these, you’ll unearth valuable crystal resources. It’s also noted that some asteroids are big enough to land on and build yourself a new star base.

Orbital bases allow you to build anywhere in space - and we mean anywhere

“Why limit yourself to a base on an asteroid? Free-floating modular bases can be built ANYWHERE in space,” devs tease.

With orbital bases, there are no limits. You can “build your own truck stop for star ships, orbital restaurant, or military outpost” as you watch other planets simply float by.

Own your own space station

As of today, No Man’s Sky players can own their own space station which devs say is one of the most highly requested features in the update.

The station is yours to decorate and adjust to your liking with next to no limitations on building.

Form a new alliance as you invite players to stand by your side

Players can now form their very own alliance, inviting others to join them in a new society.

It’ll come as no surprise that within an alliance, you can build a network of stations - so it’s especially handy that you can now own space stations too.

Alliances can “rise the new leaderboards to compete for the largest, richest or most prominent alliance”.

Reach for the stars in a new “perilous” undertaking

Fancy taking on a tricky task? No Man’s Sky now permits players to undertake a journey to the centre of their own star system.

It’s not an easy feat, as there’s no word on what you may find if you’re successful, but our curiosity is certainly already piqued.

Take a trip down memory lane in this massive new expedition

Finally, a new expedition is launching alongside COSMOS and it sounds very special. ‘Our Journey Continues’ is essentially a trip down memory lane with every milestone representing one of No Man’s Sky 40 updates.

“It is like a museum of each update, unlocking the features of each update as we added them, along with a spacelog of interesting facts and developers commentary for each update. It’s been a real joy to revisit some of those moments for us,” Murray explained.
